Welcome to our Physics lesson on Input and Output Circuit Components, this is the second lesson of our suite of physics lessons covering the topic of Electronic Components and Switching, you can find links to the other lessons within this tutorial and access additional physics learning resources below this lesson.

Input and Output Circuit Components

The components in an electric circuit are classified into two categories: input and output components (devices). Some examples of input components include:

  • Pressure switches (switches that are activated by pushing them)
  • Reed switch (switches that are activated by means of magnets)
  • Variable resistors or rheostats (resistors whose value can be changed manually)
  • Thermistor (it is a temperature-dependent resistor)
  • LDR (light-dependent resistor)
  • Microphone, etc.

As for the output components, we can mention:

  • LED (light emitting diode)
  • Bulb
  • Buzzer
  • Loudspeaker
  • Relay
  • Electric heater
  • Electric bell
  • Electric motor, etc.

An input device or sensor activates one or more output devices. For example, a microphone may activate a loudspeaker; a pressure switch may activate a bulb and so on.

The input devices are also known as transducers, i.e. devices that convert electric signals into other forms or vice-versa.
