In addition to the tutorial for Length, Mass and Time on this page, you can also access the following Units and Measurements learning resources for Length, Mass and Time

In this Physics tutorial, you will learn:

  • Knowledge on the definition, properties and units of length, mass and time
  • The meaning of dimensional analysis and its importance
  • How to find a formula using dimensional analysis
  • What are the limitations of dimensional analysis use

Introduction

Every group of people is organized according to a certain hierarchy. The role of some members is more important than that of the others despite all of them belonging to the same group or staff. This rule is generic and is applied in other fields as well. Thus, for example some personal items (mobile phone, laptop, car) are more important than some others (socks, pen) and so on. We can give many other examples in this regard.

Units in science are no exception to this rule, they have their own hierarchy as well. This hierarchy or order of importance is established taking into account the frequency of their use in forming derived units. Just for illustration, the units of length, mass and time appear in a very large number of combined units, such as: unit of velocity (m/s), unit of acceleration (m/s2), unit of force (kg × m/s2), unit of energy (kg × m2/s2), unit of power (kg × m2/s3), unit of pressure (kg/m × s2) and many others.

As you see, these three units are particularly important. For this reason, they are discussed separately in this article.
